For the second straight weekend our volleyball family traveled to Rochester, our venue this time being RIT. We’d be playing several regional teams, so it was important that we come away with several wins… and hopefully go undefeated!
Keuka is a young, up and coming team in our region and it was obvious from the get-go that they wanted to beat us. While it was a competitive match, we won decisively in three sets, 25-18, 25-14, and 25-19. Sara Madison had an outstanding 14 kills while Paulina and Jess both had five. Jess also had a strong night at the net defensively with six total blocks. We were off to a strong start.
Our second match of the evening was against St. John Fisher. It had been a long time since we’d dropped a match to Fisher, and we hoped to continue our winning ways against them. Ours was one of the most thrilling matches of the RIT tournament as it went to five sets. The first four sets went 17-25, 25-22, 25-18, 18-25. We then shot ourselves in the foot in the fifth set by missing our first four serves! As fate would have it we would drop the set by four points, 11-15. Sara and Paulina both had strong evenings offensively with 16 and 14 kills while Brit added 23 digs defensively.
After a delicious breakfast at Jay’s Diner (highly recommended!), we returned to RIT for a second day, beginning with our second meeting with Rochester. We first saw them in Cortland and went to five sets. This time around we’d have an easier path to victory, winning in three sets, 25-17, 25-20, 25-20.
Our final match was against Medaille and we’d come away with another convincing victory in three sets, 25-22, 25-15, 25-19. Sara and P both had 10 kills while Jess came away with nine. Kelly ran our offense well, finishing with 36 assists. We also did a great job behind the service line, finishing with 11 aces.
For the third straight week Sara Madison was voted to the All-Tournament Team! What a great way to start a college career! Moreover, each week one player is awareded the team Hard Hat, a recognition of superior effort, leadership, and attitute. Last week's winner was Liza, and this week she chose to pass it on to KO!
While we hoped to go undefeated, we’ll take a 3-1 weekend. On Wednesday night we play a very strong Nazareth team (10-3 this season). Wish us luck!
