4-0 at NY Regional Challenge

Zesus broke the school record
for service aces and reached the
2,000 dig milestone this week
Headed into the last regular season tournament of the year at the NY Regional Challenge at Rochester University we wanted to play well against tough competition.  The competition was going to be solid as we had RIT, Brockport, St. Lawrence and NYU on the schedule.  Now we needed to play well and RIT was our first foe on Friday.

We started a bit slow dropping the first set 21-25.  We made some adjustments and played better defense the rest of the way winning the next three sets 19-10-18.  Linds finished with 12 kills and 8 digs.  Zesus had 15 digs and reached the 2,000 dig milestone in her career during the match!  At this point every dig builds on her career record.  Mick had 7 digs and Jenny had 5 total blocks to help in the win.

Brockport had just taken us to 5 sets last weekend so we were ready for a battle.  Our offense proved to be too much for them as we racked up 40 kills in a three set sweep of our SUNYAC rival 25-17, 25-14, 25-18.  Miss Olson led the way again with 8 kills and dug 15 balls.  Jenny had 7 kills and 6 total blocks against their strong left side attackers.  Hanner hit .500 with 5 kills.  Brit Lis had 32 assists and 9 digs.

We had yet to see St. Lawrence this season.  They were regionally ranked 6th the week prior to our match and last season we had a heck of a match against them.  The Blue Devils swept 25-20, 25-17, 25-23.  Jenny could not be stopped as she tallied 17 kills in 24 attempts.  Em Linn also had a strong offensive showing with 10 kills and 2 total blocks.  Lauren passed a perfect 3.0 in serve receive and had 14 digs.  A great game from Lo.  Zureck tied the all-time service aces record with 3 more aces and a career total of 232!  Brit dished out 46 assists and ran a great offense.

We had beaten NYU earlier in the season.  Since then, they have been very good and achieved a ranking of third in the region.  We knew they would be out for blood but were prepared.  We hit .333 in the first set and won 25-20.  Emily led us with 5 kills in the opening frame.  We dropped the second and third set 22-25, 18-25.  We awoke in the fourth set and won 25-16 before finishing off NYU 15-12.  Brit had 53 assists and 11 digs and played fantastic.  Z broke the service ace record by adding two more and had 32 digs... a season high.  Mick played really well and chipped in 20 digs which was her season high.  Offensively Lindsey led with 18 kills and added 20 digs to our defense.  Emily had 14 kills and Jenny added 10.

An undefeated weekend truly was a team effort.  We did a great job working through adversity and keeping pressure on our opponents.

Sarah "Zesus" Zureck enjoyed an unprecedented weekend.  In summary, she broke the school record for career service aces, reached the 2,000 dig milestone, was named all-tournament team, was named SUNYAC Athlete of the Week and ECAC Athlete of the Week.  Props to Z for all her accolades.  Being her coach for almost four full seasons now... I know that the only accolade she is ready to welcome is a SUNYAC title.  We are all with her!
