Why did you quit?

By Ryan Maloney, assistant women's volleyball coach

Head Coach Geoff Braun during a preseason meeting

Four years ago we had a freshman quit our team. She wanted to study both vocal performance and theatre, and needed more time to dedicate to it. She wasn't going to be a professional volleyball player, but she very well might make a career using her voice.

This is a very good reason to quit -- to be the best at something you love. In cases like this, quit as many times as needed.

But sometimes we quit because we're afraid. Afraid of a difficult conversation, afraid of embarrassment, afraid we'll be seen as a fraud. Most of all, we quit when we're afraid to fail.

Quitting when we're afraid means avoiding exactly what we needed to move forward.
