Jennifer Michelsen ('12) Update on Life After College

Life after Fredonia has been a series of changes! When leaving Fredonia, I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Graduating with an Exercise Science degree left me with many options in careers I could potentially pursue. Although it was really frustrating not knowing what the future had in store for me, I wanted to be confident in all decisions I made about my future. While taking time to think about my future, I started working at a daycare. Call me crazy, but I loved the "terrible two" year olds! Two's is such a fun age, and I got to see them grow and change every day! Working with kids has always been a passion of mine. I decided the best choice for me was to apply to an Occupational Therapy Master's program. I had done an internship at Foundations, an Occupational Therapy based Preschool in Orchard Park my senior year at Fredonia and absolutely loved it. For those of you who don't know what OT is, a general explanation is that OT's help people be able to participate in activities of their daily lives that are important to them. I FINALLY knew this was a career that I wanted to pursue.

I was thankfully accepted into the D'Youville College Occupational Therapy Master's program for Fall 2013. It was an exciting and terrifying feeling. I was really nervous about going back to school after taking a year off, especially because I had such a great undergrad experience at Fredonia. It was weird for me to think of going to school without playing volleyball, and having a huge support system with me. Luckily for me, majority of my volleyball friends are still amongst my best friends! Once you are a part of the Fredonia State Volleyball program, you know you'll always have the
support of all the alumni players, staff, and Coach Braun. Fredonia State Volleyball has definitely played an important role in shaping the hardworking, dedicated person I have become. I cannot thank everyone enough for that!

I am currently in first year, second semester of my OT program. I can't say that this road of grad school has been easy, but it is really rewarding. I have to work really hard knowing that I am held to a standard of maintaining specific grades, but I know I will be a better therapist for it. I am very fortunate that everyone in my program is really great, and the instructors are very knowledgeable. When I graduate, I hope to become a Pediatric
Occupational Therapist. It will be so rewarding to be able to make a huge impact on a child's life. I am really happy with my decision to enroll in this program. I have grown as a person drastically in the past couple months! As a bunch of the graduates this year
head into grad school, one piece of advice I can give you from my experience is hard work pays off, and it will never go unnoticed!
