Jenny Newhouse ('12) on Life After College

Jenny in her classroom at Persell Middle School

Attending Fredonia was the easiest and best decision I have ever made. Leaving, however, not as easy. After graduating in 2012, I returned home to Amherst to pursue my goal of becoming a teacher. I enrolled in graduate school at Buffalo State and began substitute teaching in surrounding districts. While substitute teaching was a great experience, I was itching for my own classroom. After applying, interviewing and later being offered a job in North Carolina, I was told about an open position in Jamestown, NY where I student taught. A week later I interviewed and received the good news! I am currently in my first year teaching at Persell Middle School in Jamestown, NY. I am a 5th and 6th grade Special Education teacher. Despite the many late nights after school of a first year
teacher, I am loving every minute of it! Moving out of your comfort zone and to a small town can be scary, but I am very fortunate to be doing what I love everyday.

My time at Fredonia would not have been what it was without volleyball. Not many people get to spend every day playing a sport they love, in a place they love with their best friends. Working with
Coach Braun and the team was priceless. In almost 24 years have never met a more committed, competitive, hard-working and fun group of people. It’s hard to top being apart of winning a SUNYAC Championship, going to the Sweet Sixteen’s and receiving All-American honors senior year, but the best part of
my time at Fredonia really was leaving with my FSU Volleyball family. The values that I have gained from my time at Fredonia are things I try to instill in my students every day.
