SUNYAC Sweep!

Paulina was named Fredonia Athlete of the Week

A three-day weekend trip took us on a journey through the Adirondack region of New York. Amongst the rural towns lies Potsdam, the site of our second SUNYAC pool play. With the new regional format in the conference, it would be our first trip to Potsdam in over a decade.

First up on Friday evening was Oswego. Our serving was very strong in the match and kept the Lakers off balance all match. We finished as a team with 14 serving aces, tied for our season high. Whenever a team serves that well they're difficult to beat, and indeed we took the match in three sets, 25-16, 25-6, 25-17. On top of our great serving, we also hit .346 as a team and held Oswego's hitters to only .091. An quick recipe for victory.

Saturday morning we met with Cortland. The Red Dragons ended our season last year in the SUNYAC Semifinals and it would be nice to get a little redemption this time around. It became quickly apparent that we'd have more success this year and we won the match in three sets 25-20, 25-10, 25-19. Hannah had eight kills and hit for .636. Sara also finished the match with nine kills and hit for .318. LO also did a particularly great job covering the court defensively, finishing with five digs.

Our final match before the trip home was against host Potsdam, who was celebrating their senior night. Up to that point Potsdam had gone 4-1 in conference play, so it was bound to be a tough match. Potsdam plays great defense and does a great job in serve receive. They were able to neutralize some of our tough serving throughout the match, but our hitters, Paulina in particular (12 kills), did a great job putting balls away. The odds would tip in our favor as set scores were 25-20, 25-22, 25-22.

Special congratulations to Paulina for a great performance this weekend and for being named Fredonia's Athlete of the Week. She averaged 9.3 kills, 2.3 aces, 8.0 digs, and 1.7 blocks per match. Great job!

It felt awesome to sweep pool play and not drop a set! Everything seems to be coming together at just the right time in the season. We'll play Medaille tomorrow evening in Dod's Hall and then we have a well-earned weekend off :)
