Blue Devil Invitational: 1-3 Weekend

An aggressive serve from Hokaj
This past weekend we hosted seven very good volleyball teams from around the region. Our Blue Devils played in a pool with D'Youville, RIT, and Westminster. We knew we would need to play with a lot of focus in order to be successful against these teams.

In our first match, we came away with a convincing victory against D'Youville in three sets, 25-23, 25-17, and 25-10. Paulina led our attack with eight kills and three aces. Hannah finished with seven kills, and Mere finished with six. Both Hannah and Meredith were strong defensively with three blocks each. Kelly was very good in balancing our attack and accumulated 24 assists.

In our Friday night match we faced RIT, a team that we knew was very competitive last year and even better this year. After starting slow in the first set we came back strong in the second and third sets, but ultimately lost the match in four. The scores were 12-25, 24-26, 25-23, 18-25. Jess DiChristopher had eight kills, while Hannah, Lindsey, and Paulina each had seven. Lauren Hokaj and Lauren O'Hara led our floor defense, totaling 21 digs.

Saturday afternoon we were set to face a strong Westminster team that presented us with varied offensive play sets. Ultimately we would drop the match in three sets, 18-25, 15-25, and 19-25. Linds had eight kills and Meredith had seven kills with three blocks. Hannah also added four blocks.

We would meet Case Western in the final match of the tournament but lost again in three sets, 18-25, 13-25, and 14-25. Lindsey showed a strong arm with ten kills while Kelly had 19 assists and nine digs.

We didn't finish finish this weekend where we wanted to, or where we expected to. It often takes time for a team to find it's identity and it's frustrating to us because we know how good we can be. We've set lofty goals for ourselves and this weekend doesn't change them. Fortunately, all our girls have exceptional character and are committed to becoming the team we know we're capable of being.
