How to get a job

By Ryan Maloney

The desk of the Blue Devil Fitness Center on Fredonia's campus

Every day I get employment applications from students hoping to work in Fredonia's fitness center.

A few days each week a student approaches me to ask about getting a job. Approaching is more powerful than the application.

And from time to time someone I trust will recommend a student for a job. The recommendation is much more powerful than the approach.

But rarely, indeed almost never, will a student approach me with a plan. "Here's who I am, here's what I can do, here's proof, and here's how I'm going to make your life easier. Hire me."

That student is a rare find. But the rare find, by definition, isn't looking for a job in the first place.
