A "blanket fortress", made on a bus trip in 2008 |
Your team reports for preseason.
Your team endures preseason.
Your team goes through its first week of classes.
Your team gets on the bus for a tournament. Together. For the first time.
And then you know.
You know who the friend groups are. You know because they're sitting together. They knew way before you.
This isn't a big deal, unless your team doesn't understand what's going on. Then it's a really big deal. Then friend groups turn into cliques.
But if they understand that friend groups are meant to intersect from time to time, that "getting outside your comfort zone" is on the other side of the bus, then you're okay. Then the friend groups can be both nourishing and a source of understanding.
Our world doesn't need more wealth. It certainly doesn't need more polarization. But it could probably use a few more people who understand.
