2015 Recruit Profile: Alex Allard

"Alex is a strong athlete who moves very well on the court.  She brings some much needed depth to the middle and has tremendous potential to make an immediate impact.  She reminds me a lot of another Amherst athlete who enjoyed a four-year career here… 2011 All-American Jenny Newhouse." ~ Coach Braun

I heard from one of our admissions counselors that when he told you that you were accepted to Fredonia you cried. I hope they were tears of happiness! Why was it such an emotional experience for you?

In high school I had a lot of challenges academically, and when I started thinking about college and looking at requirements I began to get very nervous and started to believe I would not be accepted into any, especially not Fredonia.

I thought about trying to apply for the EDP program to see if I was qualified and it turned out I was. After my interview with David White (admissions counselor) I knew this program would help me so much academically and financially to have the opportunity to attend college. Neither of my parents attended college, so for me it was very important that I did.

After my interview I was so nervous to hear back. I only applied to two schools, Buffalo State and Fredonia. After not hearing back for a while I began to be very discouraged so I was looking towards Buffalo State but I knew I really wanted to go away for school so I wouldn't be fully happy there.

Then I finally heard I was accepted into Fredonia, Fredonia was always my top choice so finally hearing I was accepted in the EDP program to was a lot to handle at one time. Of course, they were tears of happiness, I was finally going to college!

You were raised by your grandmother, is that correct? Can you tell me about that? What does she mean to you?

That is correct. I have been living with my grandmother since I was six years old. Being so, it has always been very normal to me. For a while it used to be just me and her, but since I was 11 she has been with her husband. She is an amazing woman and has done everything in her power to make sure I have the best life ever. I knew I had to go to college for her, to make sure she knew how much everything she did meant to me.  I look at her as my mom and have never really thought different.

The last player we had from Amherst High School was an All-American (Jenny Newhouse, 2012). Those are some big shoes to fill! Do you have any goals for yourself coming in as a freshman athletically? How about academically, or personally?

I knew Jenny actually. She was an assistant coach at Amherst for a season, although I was only a freshman at the time so I didn't get to know her as much as I would have liked to. I have a lot of goals for myself. I feel that without goals you don't have enough motivation to actually get it done.

One of my athletic goals is to be able to fully fill her shoes and hopefully be All-American as well.

Academically my goal is to constantly have at least a 3,0, and to make the deans list. This is a very important goal of mine because I really want to change how my performance in high school was, My biggest personal goal is to one day be on ESPN reporting NBA games. That is my biggest goal because I want to strive very high, therefore I know I will need to work harder.
