Three Thoughts Heading into SUNYACs

1) Last year we went on 15 game winning streak to close out the regular season. It was a nice accomplishment, but we were able to get away with playing poorly at times... still being talented enough to get a win. Not this year. On Saturday we didn't play very well against RIT and they made us pay for it (not to mention they played outstanding volleyball that day). On Tuesday we didn't play very well against Behrend and they almost made us pay for it. It's good to know that we'll need to earn everything we get from here on out.

2) SUNYAC weekend has a way of leveling the playing field. Regardless of how your season has gone up to that point, there aren't any bad teams on SUNYAC weekend... anyone can beat anyone. We play Cortland, Potsdam, and Oneonta this weekend and we'll need to play with a lot of confidence (and have fun!) to win.

3) After talking to another college coach in the region, we've been experimenting with NOT giving serving spots. Normally we tell our girls exactly where to serve before each rally, but on Tuesday against Behrend we tried giving them the choice of where and/or who they want to serve at. It's a small way of giving the players ownership of what they do on the court. Overall the girls appreciate it... and as a coach it makes you think about other ways you can give your players ownership of their own skills.

BONUS THOUGHT #4

4) Thought #3 made me think of something else... that this is the first year I've started to see our players coach EACH OTHER. Maybe a part of it is because both Lindsay and Liza have had to sit out for a while with injuries, and they both have the ability to take on a coaching role... but also maybe we're all taking more and more ownership of Fredonia Volleyball.
