People love big announcements.
The wedding announcement. The new job. The New Year's resolution. They're all exciting, making our social media feeds light up when we tell our friends. This despite that a great many marriages end in divorce, that equally many are unhappy in their jobs, and that most will eventually quit their new initiatives.
In high school sports, it's become trendy to announce what college you've committed to through social media. It feels good, but it's far from a guarantee that you'll actually spend four years there, let alone be happy with the decision.
In college sports, it's fashionable for a coach to announce his recruiting class. This, despite the reality that retention rates -- how many athletes you're returning -- is a better predictor of long-term success. As business strategists know, retention trumps acquisition.
Indeed, enthusiasm is common, endurance is rare.
