We secretly want others to fail

By Ryan Maloney, assistant women's volleyball coach

Immediately following the loss in the 2015 SUNYAC Tournament

It's true. We sometimes hope that a peer, co-worker, or teammate fails.

If she fails, it's not so bad once I fail. If she fails, I'll feel better about myself. If she fails, I might even feel worthy again.

The ironic part is this: seeing someone else succeed is a predictive source of confidence. Seeing someone fail isn't.

The first step is noticing such a thought. The second is noticing the deception.
